Then Transformational Yoga is for You!

I love yoga. I am passionate about learning. I enjoy teaching – anything, really. I get such a high when I see someone discover something new or love who they are, as they are, just a little bit more. And sometimes I can’t believe that for a living I get to be in a room with people who are all doing their best to find their own paths in this fast, crazy making, confusing life. In my own yoga practice from time to time I find myself flowing with such ease and grace that I forget myself. And, truthfully, I sometimes have the hardest time even getting myself onto the mat. And no, I can’t put my foot behind my head. But regardless of what is happening in my life, each time I step into a yoga room to teach, it is an adventure to me and I just can’t wait to see what unfolds.

I discovered the world of yoga following a number of sports related injuries. I know you’ve heard it before, but yoga didn’t just change my body, it changed my life. In 2001 I became certified in Bikram and in 2002 Ashtanga Vinyasa at It’s Yoga in San Francisco. My husband and I then founded World Yoga in 2004, a healing arts center that quickly became one of the first green yoga studios and premier power yoga centers in the San Francisco Bay Area. After we sold the yoga studio in 2007, I was able to return to to teaching yoga as much as my heart desired.

My teaching is most inspired by the fantastic teachers I was blessed to manage for 5 years and the over 6,000 students who walked through World Yoga’s door. I am grateful for the influence of many teachers, including Shiva Rea, Saul David Raye, Sharon Gannon, David Life, Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers. My classes combine a balance of  asana (postures), breathwork (pranayama) and dhyana (meditation). I often incorporate aromatherapy, inspirational music, visualizations, poetry and sound healing. On special occasions I invite my musician friends to serenade us during our practice. I always take my students where they are, and encourage them to practice with curiosity, compassion and humor, and to cultivate gratitude for everything that arises in the yoga room. My desire is to inspire my students to dig deeper, open wider and take all they learn on that 2 x 6 foot mat, what I call the “mirror of life,” and allow it to transform their daily lives.

Public Classes
In addition to offering private workshops and retreats, and a monthly circle of women doing yoga called the Bliss Kula, I teach 2 weekly ongoing public classes:

Flow – Wednesdays 12 Noon to 1PM, Being Yoga, Burlingame
Yin – Thursdays 12 Noon to 1 PM followed by Meditation until 1:15, Being Yoga, Burlingame

Transformational Yoga Privates
Integrating yoga postures, yoga breathwork, various meditation practices, and guided imagery, this form of work brings about a deeper connection to yourself and gives you tangible tools for connecting with more authenticity and awareness to all areas of your life.  I offer in home yoga privates for individuals and groups, as well as private sessions in my office in San Mateo.  Contact me to set up a session!

What is Yoga?
In general, yoga means union, or to connect, to join.  Yoga is an ancient system and study of the many ways we can find connection to ourselves, our bodies, our minds, to those around us, to the present moment, to peace, and for some, to the divine of their choice.

What is Hatha Yoga?

The form of yoga I teach is Hatha, or the physical practice of yoga.  Hatha, translated from the ancient  language of Sanskrit to mean Sun/Moon, is a system of asanas or poses designed to bring you into direct relationship with your body and through that relationship develop a deeper connection to other aspects of yourself.  There are many kinds of Hatha Yoga.  Which form to practice is based on personal taste and needs.

What styles of Hatha yoga do you teach?
I teach:

  • Restorative – A deeply relaxing class using supported postures, breathing and gentle music to allow the body to heal from injury, illness and stress.
  • Yin – A class that focuses on passive, long held stretches designed to open up muscles, connective tissue, and meridians (lines of energy in the body) resulting in increased energy and flexibility.
  • Flow – Postures are linked together with breath and movement to create a full body experience that increases strength, flexibility, relaxation and clarity.
  • Ashtanga Vinyasa (Modified) -Based on the original Flow created by Pattabhi Jois, this vigorous class offers a set sequence designed to bring about detoxification and purification of the body and mind.
  • Power Flow – A Flow class with a more intense pacing and advanced poses as well as more hand balancing poses.
